My hairless rat, Tony <3
Nico rat says hello :)
Such adorable ratties~
My sweet ratties:
Percy & Grover- agouti hooded
Nico- black hooded
Dobby - albino hairless dumbo
Tony - hairless
Piper - mink English Irish (mismarked)
This is our Brazilian short tailed opossum, Ellie.
She’s super sweet and adorable and loves scrambled eggs (which apparently she managed to get extra this morning by mooching it off two people).
Giving Grover Christmas
I have to share this story, because it’s just so sweet and Christmassy that I think it needs to be shared.
I have three rats that live together named Percy, Nico and Grover. Recently, Grover was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor and he’s basically going to live until his quality of life is gone and I have to put him to sleep. Lately, he’s been kind of mopey and has taken to sleeping in their big igloo while the other two ratties “stand guard” by sleeping on top of/around the igloo. They’ve really been looking after him, bringing him food from one of the higher shelves and helping him when he gets wobbly climbing around.
But today, as if to show just how awesome and sweet they are, Percy and Nico gave Grover Christmas.
We handed out small pieces of leftover wrapping paper to some of our animals tonight and the ratties got their piece as well. Nico was super excited, running around the cage with it billowing behind him as he darted up and down the shelves. Percy, who is generally wary about anything non-food that comes into the cage, just eyed it warily.
Then suddenly, Nico stopped his running. He paused, turned on the shelf and slowly took the paper downstairs and tucked it in the back corner. Then, toning down his excitement some, he poked into Grover’s igloo and nudged him as if to say, “Hey, hey, I got a surprise for you!”
Finally getting his attention, Nico runs back out of the igloo and grabs up the paper, which he excitedly brings over to Grover. Grover pokes at it, then with more excitement, starts to tear at it. Next thing I know, Nico’s helping Grover drag the whole thing into the igloo with him and shredding off little bedding bits. Even Percy, who seemed pretty worried about the whole paper-business, came down to Grover’s new pimped out igloo and gave him a nuzzle and a clean.
Grover, as you can see from the picture, now has a very nice Christmassy bed. And Nico, although it was obvious he really loved playing with the paper, gave it up to make Grover happy.
It was if he was saying, “I know you’re down buddy, so I’m going to bring you Christmas.”
And he did. To Grover and perhaps, considering how much I’ve been worrying about Grover, he brought it to me as well.
This is what happened when we gave our sugar gliders wrapping paper. (aka, America!glider really freaking loves the camera)
So we gave our sugar gliders some wrapping paper and at first they were intrigued. “Suddenly, our cage floor makes crinkling noises! OMG!”
Then America!glider decided to poke around in it and I readied the camera. The photos above were taken in sequence:
Photo 1: Yay wrapping paper! (You can see England!glider off to the right)
Photo 2: OMG WHAT IS THAT THING WITH THE FLASHING LIGHT?! (yes, America glider ran up towards it and…)
Photo 3: HELLO NEW SHINY THING YOU ARE COOL AND I AM CURIOUS ABOUT YOU!
Basically every time after this that I tried to get pictures of them playing with the paper, America!glider’s nose ended up in my camera lens. England!glider, who seemed to be all “Oh that’s just a camera” went about his normal sugar glider business.
Happy Holidays from Pascal the veiled chameleon!
