British underdog Gemma Gibbons won a fairytale silver medal at judo yesterday — then looked to Heaven and mouthed an emotional: “I love you, Mum.”
It was a touching tribute to her mother Jeanette, who introduced her to the sport aged six and guided her early career before dying of leukaemia in 2004.
Grateful Gemma, 25 — who was ranked only 42nd in the world — fought back tears as she said later: “It was just a way of saying ‘thank you’ to her.”
